Original cars had dimensions and general compatibility with the original and most numerous BMT "steels", A, B, BT, BX. In the post-WWII era, when NYCTA was reducing the use of wood gate cars that saw partial rush hour service on the outer portions of the West End and Culver lines, some SIRT cars acdtually saw service on the BMT before being replaced with new equipment. And current equipment consists of the remaining R40 subway cars, onlly slightly modified to meet FRA requirements for tracks still connected to the national freight network. (And don't forget that the BMT did provide freigiht service with it South Brooklyn Railway.)

My understanding too is that the SIRT is scheduled to receive new cars under the MTA capital improvement program. Lately though its become a hangout for Heroin peddling thats been a plague on the island and elsewhere.
As for it being an outcast there was a story back in 2014 or 2015 about a rock being thrown at one of the trains which one of the passengers thought was a bullet and called 911.
The operator kept asking what Letter or number train this was and could not seem to grasp the concept that the SIRT being the only passenger train on Staten Islamd does not have a designated letter or number.

It was not a loss of traction power as I read the post, it was for the safety of the fire department personel fighting the ConEd equipment fire that the service was suspended. CTA and Metra in Chicago suspends service with a fire next to the tracks.

The SIRT was a subsidary of the B&O Railroad for many years until about the early 1980's. The transit cars used were supposed to be compatable with at least one of the Subway lines in New York - waiting for a tunnel that was never built.
The SIRT has always been an outcast - with the B&O and now with the New York transit agency.

Back up generators can be used for light duty interuptions - signals and crossing protection - after the batteries that support them discharge.
