The citizens of Brazil have a lot to be furious about.  Money for soccer stadiums but none for other internal improvements?

One of my nieces toured Brazil several years ago as part of a college orchestra.  She told me once you get off the beaches of Rio de Janiero the rest of the city is a disaster.  It makes Camden NJ look good.  I asked her if what Anthony Bordain said about Sao Paulo was true, i.e. "Sao Paulo looks like LA threw up on New York!"  After she picked herself up off the floor from laughing she said  "Yes!  It's true!"

Can't blame those Brazilians for protesting, not one bit.

What it's about is that the government of Brazil has lots and lots of money to throw around building new stadiums for the World Cup of soccer, yet there's never any money to support the infrastructure that the citizens actually use, like buses.

Someone is engaging in regime change here. Could be CIA,Russia or more likely Bilderberg  as this riot came right afer the Bilderburg Conferance....this is more then just a transit fare hike.

It definitely involves a lot more than just a fare hike, the demonstrations and rioting are due to the inequities of Brazilian prosperity.  Some people are getting richer, a lot of people are not.

It most definitely is not "outside agitators" as implied in the previous post.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

If people cannot afford the fare, that is not the problem of the transit authority. The transit authority has fixed expenses and these must be paid by an amalgamation of the fare box and the tax base. You get to decide how much tax money goes to the transit authority, and then the fare MUST make up the difference.

Getting into a fight with a Lion may not be the wisest decision.  But here I want to.  Except, that I kind of lack the will to win because in some ways I agree with Lion.

I think fare affordability is a problem of the transit authority.  My own ta, New Jersey Transit, agrees and considers that issue but I don't necessarily agree with what they do.

There was a time when one of our cities, Trenton, offered free buses.  No fares.  You just hopped on and rode.  A lot of bus riders disliked it because homeless people began using the buses for shelter in bad weather.  They wanted the fares back.

Also, fares allow customers to vote with their dollars for the routes they want.  Since paying local transit fares, even if high, is still a lot cheaper than owning a car a fare may really save us money.  In my state for most of my commuting years commuting costs were less than auto insurance would have been.

Finally, I want NJT to raise my fare.  I am a senior citizen.  I get half fare even during rush hours.  At 62 NJT charges you only half fare.  All you need is proof of your age (like a drivers license) or you can get a NJT half fare card.  But why?  I'm not poor; I can afford full fare.   I think there should be an income qualification for half fare and age shouldn't matter.

So Lion, as far as I am concerned, I think you have made a wrong mistake.  Except when you are right.  Which is now.

LION Bristles his tail whenever New Yorkers complain about a fare increase. Even at twice the price it is the best deal in transportation around. From here (Richardton) to Dickinson (the nearest town) is about 60 miles round trip, or almost $34.00 in carfare. (based of govt/mile figures--which is what we use). A similar ride on the LIRR would be half of that, and a similar ride on the subway would be $5.00.

Brazil? Who knows, but gasoline probably does cost more there than here, and cars come from the same manufacturing plants.

If people cannot afford the fare, that is not the problem of the transit authority. The transit authority has fixed expenses and these must be paid by an amalgamation of the fare box and the tax base. You get to decide how much tax money goes to the transit authority, and then the fare MUST make up the difference.

LION says, set a HIGHER base fare, and then offer discounts to purchasers of commutation medium. Let students buy student tickets in their school, with the Board of Education picking up the difference. Let the elderly buy discounts at the senior citizen's centers, let hose on Welfare get discount passes from the welfare agencies. Those who as can afford to pay more do pay more, those who need help get the help that they need.

Rase in fares was 20 cents, wich is too much for most brasilians, since their normal average is in the vicinity of 220 U$D per month
