We ride trains for fun...
Posted by henry6 on Friday, May 10, 2013 4:15 PM

This is what Ridewithmehenry is all about: riding trains to ride trains...Iwe drive from Binghamton, NY to an NJT/MNRR station then ride all day to someplace and come back.  For instance, next Fri, 5/17...will leave Binghamton by 5:45AM to Hackettestown, NJ ...not a business; no business, religion, politics, or problems discussed, relax and experience operations, equipment, structures, the present and the past, see what is and what was, maybe take a picture here or there, but relax, enjoy, and have fun.  If you want to join us from Binghamton or enroute, just let me know...

Idea is to ride Boonton Line to Hoboken, PATH to WTC, maybe see new old South Ferry Sta on the One train; ferry, SIRT, to Brooklyn and some surface subway lines not already done. Back to Hoboken to get #643 MU to Dover then transfer back to H'twn.  It is doable, a little push here and there, but comfortable pacing…

It was another great Ridwithmehenry day on Friday! We had to abandon part of our schedule because even I thought it was too ambitious. Especially regarding an opportunity to grab lunch and some real make up time if needed. When one of the guys said if he were going to Coney Island, that had to mean lunching on Nathan's Hot Dogs. So it was to happen that way by eliminating the Staten Island part of the trip...Plus we chose to leave from Netcong to take advantage of the wonderful Carmines Italian cousine for dinner. We rode the same trains as chosen on NJT but amended NYC subways. Took a few extra minutes at Hoboken in the morning, got the netxt PATH to WTC...then walked to Rector for the 1 train to South Ferry and the R train from Whithall St. Got the F strain at Jay St. and did a stop over at the highest station on the system, Smith -9th which just reopened after a great refurbishing job. Grabbed the next F train to Stillwell Ave. and got our Nathan's on the boardwalk because the original restaurant is still closed because of Sandy. Enjoyed the sun, the sea breeze, and the lunch then climbed back to the staiton for the Q train to Brighton Beach then the B train to Prospect Park, the Shuttle to Franklin Ave (only segment of single track railroading on the system), the C train to W. 4th and the E train to WTC and APATH to Hoboken with time to look around. Train 643 to Dover was as hoped, a 3 car MU set, then train 1079 back into Netcong and a great dinner at Carmine's. Walked into the house at 11:05 having left there at 5:20AM! Great day for Ridewithmehenry riding

I'm glad you rode Friday when the weather was better than it is today (Sunday), Henry.  Your day sounds full.

John
