Newark to Trenton Train

Yesterday I took New Jersey Transit from Newark to Trenton.  The time was impressive:  56 minutes for the trip.  We left Newark at 9:09 am and arrived 5 minutes early at 10:00 am.  

This was an express train.  It stopped at Newark Liberty Airport, Princeton Junction, Hamilton and Trenton.  The cars were the old Comets; I didn't see the engine.  I was impressed.

Not too many years ago I commuted on a Clocker, Don.  It took 55 minutes from Princeton Junction to Newark.  Yesterday Newark to Trenton was 56 minutes.  The NJT schedule shows 18 minutes between Princeton Junction and Trenton so yesterday's train was going a lot faster than the Amtrak Clocker I used to ride.  

Even before Sandy NJT was running some Comets on the Northeast Corridor along with many bilevels.   But I know a lot of bilevels were flooded and need extensive repairs.

My Ridewithmehenry riders also hit the Corridor yesterday....we first went to Secaucus Jct. from Port Jervis leaving there at 7:46AM and arrived a minute late--9:43--at SJ.  Then the 10:17 departure for Trenton aboard a comet push pull set making all the stops along the way to Trenton and arriving on time at 11:41.  The the River LIne departure to Camden at 11:48 arriving at Rand Center at 12:55, the PATCO 1:15 to 16th and Locust, the Broad St. Subway and an underground trolley car (streetcars running virtually on the markers ahead) to 30th St., the SEPTA 2:37 three car MU almost full (everyone stuffs themselves in the first and second cars but the third car has plenty of seats!) arriving Trenton right on at 3:25.  Then the NJT MU "express" shoehorning people into what appeared to be a 12 car train with no stop at Jersey Ave, and skipping the stops after Metropark to Newark Airport and on time, but crowded, arrival at 4:54 at SJ.  Perplexing was the last leg to Port Jervis...printed timetable show 4:57 #53 from SJ to PJ, first stop Suffern and PJ arrival at 6:54.  But computer, train board, and actual #53 left at 5:02, first stop Annendale, then all stops to PJ arriving 7:08..If NJT says all operations are by full service as in the 10/14/12 printed timetable, what is #53?  Where is it printed for the public to know the truth?  

Sandy...and even Irene...damages are seen all over.  You can discern the difference between the storms simply by noting the direction in which the trees have fallen...those which fell in a westerly direction.are from Sandy, others from previous coastal and storms from the west..   There are piles of debris in many places, still scattered in more rural and sylvan areas.  And people still talking about all the storms and all the damages!   

As for the trains and cars: all full, virtually no empty seats from the three car trains out of PJ in the morning and Philadelphia in the afternoon to the 12 car Corridor trains, the light rail and rapid transit sets of the city, all were well used.  Watching stalled traffic on the adjacent highways or just going faster than traffic going in the same direction indicates that more services are needed from the likes of SEPTA and NJT...

Henry,  

I'm pleasantly surprised to learn how crowded your trains were.  You left Port Jervis after the the rush hours and were generally reverse commuting on all of your trips except for the final one from Secaucus Junction back home to Port Jervis.  And almost all of them were pretty full.

Yes, the lightest load was the 7:46 out of PJ with 3 cars...most seats were occupied at SJ but only one or two at most per bench.

Combing back from Trenton I was on a local that made all stops except Jersey Avenue.  It also gut stuck behind and Amtrak train stopped at Newark Liberty Airport.  The trip was a little over an hour and a half.
