Without further comment my I present this BBC Story.
It is just like they all had the same idea of what their purpose was, how it could be done, how it could be marketed, what were the needs of the people and the needs of businesses. All the same reasons are why there aren't subways in the Sahara or Antartica. If there were many, many variables and differences, then I would be suspicious. How many billions of Pounds, Euro Dollars, and US dollars were wasted on this study?
RIDEWITHMEHENRY is the name for our almost monthly day of riding trains and transit in either the NYCity or Philadelphia areas including all commuter lines, Amtrak, subways, light rail and trolleys, bus and ferries when warranted. No fees, just let us know you want to join the ride and pay your fares. Ask to be on our email list or find us on FB as RIDEWITHMEHENRY (all caps) to get descriptions of each outing.
My bet would be that subway systems and their stations were constructed along the routes that people were already commuting. Form follows function.

Yes...but there were big gambles by building out to the "suburbs" before people got there, too. The NYC line to Astoria or out to Flushing are examples of building to direct people to places to live.
Henry, You expressed my reaction exactly: How many billions of Pounds, Euro Dollars, and US dollars were wasted on this study?
No wonder the UK is in financial trouble if they are paying people to do studies like this.
A study like this would probably only run into the tens of thousands of dollars.
Going and reading the abstract, this is actually way more interesting and useful for future transit planning (which is why they spent the money) than you guys are giving it credit for.
