1. Australia -- Melborne Victoria -- Geelong commuter rail at capacity with no help until 2016 with new Regional rail line to go into service at 2016. Govt expects another 25,000+ to move into that area by 2016. One problem is short platforms on present route. Another problem is that trains share tracks with Melborne Metro in city ala Chicago North Shore. V line had 13.5 M passengers last period?
Another complaint is no rail to international airport but instead to small regional airport
2. Australia - Victoria - Melborne --- Additional information -- Public transport users association is pushing for some solution to overcrowding on Dandenong line. The other 8 or 9 routes collectively are called the "V" line. Temporary Platform extensions are one solution as platforms are now limited to 6 carriages. Original plan estimated that 6 carriage lengths would be sufficient but of course are not. Additional trains during rush hour periods not possible due to sharing tracks in Melborne city with Melborne city Metro. More frequent trains in off peak will require more level crossings to be eliminated.
V line weekend trips are getting standees. Sat up 56% and Sun up 92% since 2004. Last 12 month period ridership increase of 7.1% from 12.6M to 13.5M passengers
131 of 134 new VLocity cars on order have been delivered. But new car orders have not been placed. These DMUs capable of 160 Km/Hr = 100 MPH. These cars are generally in 3 car sets. "V" line did retire "S" set cars that were over 60 Yrs old.
