Chicago RTA steppin' into the future
Posted by Mr. Railman on Thursday, August 11, 2011 5:41 PM

So in the most recent edition of on the bi-level (metras monthly "newsletter"), PatrickCliffor talked about the new improvements that are in store for the RTA!

1. New improved filters for train cars and CTA (I think), this is done after a Chicago tribune article last year about railroad air pollution on Metra trains!

2. a universal fare card for all the RTA systems. this is to make it easier to use the system. there isn't any known way yet to deal with the fixed price of the CTA and the flexible price of metra (probably a card you'd have to load with money to use!)

3. Wi-fi on all Metra lines. this is being done in order to improve the Metra train and system at little or no cost to you. you'll be able to surf the internet on the bi-level (XD) if you don't have a laptop connect card (do they still make those?)

4. This is actually for Amtrak but it affects some metra lines as well: New ducts and air conditioning in Union Station for those hot summers.

My guess is that practically every other commuter agency has these on their public transportation. if not, it's in their futures as well
