Get off the South Shore train at Van Buren Station at 5:31 pm, walk 4 short (not Chicago-length) blocks to Dearborn and Jackson and catch the Blue Line subway at 5:46 pm straight to the airport (about a 45 minute ride + the walk) $2.25. The Blue line trains run about every 4-5 minutes at that time of day.

Mr. Railman Okay I like the SS partbut the EL isn't the best option. Take a cab to Union Station and get on the North Central Service train that departs at 6:00. You'l get to the O-Hare transfer at 6:33

I would stick with the L. It's cheaper, more frequent and takes you directly to the main terminal area, no transfers needed.
That train has a pretty decent on-time record, it's usually pulling in as the 5:32 (Train 115) is leaving Randolph.
South Shore's service is generally punctual. I'm sure that you'll arrive at Randolph Street on time.
Do south shore line trains usually run on time? I'm taking the 4:38 train on Friday from Gary to Millenium and then the "L" to O'Hare.
