Two questions:
Are the ALP-44 locomotives still in use by New Jersey Transit. If so, for how much longer?
What type of propulsion control did the Metropolitan cars (M-1) on Long Island RaliRoad have (Chopper or resistance control in how many steps)?
Resistance control. Don't know how many steps, but more than the ten of the best of the old K-class streetcar controller and less than a Westinghouse 49-step PCC controller. I think the control was semi-automatic, in that even a start with the controller handle at maximum acceleration still started with full resistance in series, and then some sort of cam controller dropped out the resistance in an appropriate rate to perform designed acceleration without wheel spin. These cars came on line in 1967, before chopper control was in general use. Rode them lots of times between my Manhattan apartment and White Plains office. Sometimes next to the engineer with the corner cab door open.
