Metra UPN bridge replacement and road clearance project
Posted by HarveyK400 on Friday, February 26, 2010 1:50 PM

Transit funds are being used almost exclusively for replacing 90+ year old bridges along the Union Pacific North Line and raising clearances for numerous low street viaducts in a five-mile stretch on Chicago's North Side.  Bridge allowable loads will be increased to permit operation of newer, heavier Metra MP36 locomotives and facilitate the retirement of lighter 30-yr old F40s.

One aspect of the project is the desire to single-track trains to facilitate realignment and reconstruction.  A universal crossover is being installed between Addison Street and Grace Street, a 1/4 mile north, to facilitate fleeting trains through the reconstruction area in both directions.  The combined Addison-Lincoln bridge is a relatively new ballasted deck thru-girder type that will not be affected.
