I watched the movie but never saw the 1974. Did you watch it yet?
I've seen the 1974 movie twice, read (and own a copy of) the book, and ride the NYC MTA alot (and love it)....and I really want to see what they've done for the remake of the flick.
RIDEWITHMEHENRY is the name for our almost monthly day of riding trains and transit in either the NYCity or Philadelphia areas including all commuter lines, Amtrak, subways, light rail and trolleys, bus and ferries when warranted. No fees, just let us know you want to join the ride and pay your fares. Ask to be on our email list or find us on FB as RIDEWITHMEHENRY (all caps) to get descriptions of each outing.
NYC Mercury I vote for the 1974 version here as they used a real subway car back then in a real subway. Also inflation as the ranson has gone from 1,000,000 dollers in 1974 to 10,000,000 dollers in 2009. But then the fare has gone from a 35 cent token to a 2.50 mag card.

I am a big fan of the original film and really could care less about the remake. Back in the early to mid 70's when the book was written and the first movie produced NYC was largely perceived to be falling apart at the seems and the atmosphere of the story portrays that (there a number of similiar films of that era such as the excellent "Dog Day Afternoon").
The idea of someone trying to take hostages in exchange for money and "a plane to Cuba" in these post 9/11 times really strains the supension of disbelieve. While such a scenario may not end well for the hostages there is no way that a ransome would be paid....
