Push-pulls have operated in the Chicago area since 1960, on NJ Transit since 1971, in Toronto since 1968, etc.  MU trains also do not have a locomotive at either end.  I don't think that safety is a real issue in this matter.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

They're both the same unless there are are buffer cars (ie. express cars, baggage or mail cars) added to the equation. In the case that a locomotive pulling a train is followed by head end cars, pulling is safer as far as protection from a head on collision is involved.
