1985 Predictions - Albuquerque & Washington DC (Dulles Extension)

I am going through my old magazine collection...

In March 1985, Pacific Railnews noted that Albuquerque was studying high speed light rail (dubbed Sagebrush LRT?) which would run from the Albuquerque airport to the capitol in Santa Fe, traveling the distance in 49 minutes.  Fast forward to 2008 - the RoadRunner commuter heavy rail extension to Santa Fe is currently under construction...

In the June 1985 issue there was an item about a privately-funded proposal to extend the WMATA (Washington DC area) Orange line extension from Vienna to the Dulles Airport for $300M. That funding option is no longer feasible (was it ever really) and later cost estimates have it much higher than that.

Take the long view when you envision a transit project...
