I have been looking for information on the manufacturer of the equipment that the WMATA uses and have come up with zero. I heard they were built in Italy?? Any information would be appreciated.

I think the original equipment was built by a US airplane company Rohr. They also provided a few turboliner trainsets for Amtrak, not sure if the DC or Amtrak equipment's still operating or if they built railcars for anyone else.

I'm pretty sure the rest of DC's equipment was built by Breda, which as you mention is Italian, something like Breda Construzione Ferroviare maybe?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Metro_rolling_stock says

 1st Rohr,

 then Breda Costruzioni Ferroviarie,

then a joint venture of Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF) of Spain and AAI Corporation of Hunt Valley, Maryland

then Alstom

Thank you. Now I just need to get a detailed rail map to see if its worth trying to model.
