DART Street Cars
Posted by videomaker on Tuesday, March 8, 2011 8:20 PM

If there is anyone on here from Dallas please speak up..

The new proposed street cars for downtown will have to be recharged every 5 miles,my question is,How many times will they have to stop and recharge to get from one end of the "downtown business district" to the other in any direction? Is'nt it more than 5 miles across in any direction?

Although I have not seen recently the proposal for the Dallas street cars, the game plan, as I understand it, is to run the cars from an extended connection point with the McKinney Avenue Trolley across the Houston Street viaduct to Oak Cliff.  Assuming this is still the game plan, the distance is less than five miles.

Part of the plan is to re-route the McKinney Avenue Trolley off of St. Paul Street and onto Harwood Street., although I will believe it when I see it.  They have been talking about this change for more than 10 years, but nothing has come of it.  Same old problem!  No money!

You note implies that they are planning to use battery powered cars.  This is a new one on me.  I was under the impression that they planned to string overhead wire, but I have not followed the developments that closely.

Sam,

I saw the article in the FW ST,and they showed a picture of a set of cars,They stated they would be cheaper to run since there was no need for overhead wires and they could be charged every 5-6 miles..They run on Batteries...

Interesting.  Do they  have to stop to recharge, or can they just run under CAT that has 5  mile breaks periodically?

They appear to be bi-modal -- can run either under wire or (up to 5 miles) on battery power (presumably to bridge gaps or go beyond the end of the catenary).

Here is a link to DART that contains a clip on one type of potential street car to run on the proposed line from Main and Harwood to Methodist Medical Center, which is across the Trinity River from downtown Dallas.

 http://www.dart.org/news/news.asp?ID=947

If it will not take you there when you click on it, paste it into your browser.  If that does not work, go to www.Dart.org, click on News, and look for the March 8th news clip on the prototype equipment being evaluated for the proposed street car line.
