I know I already said SD38-2s and SDM for my favorites, but that is far from all I like. Some more I like are SD45s, IC rebuilt GP10s (I really miss Iowa Interstate's GP10s), F45s/FP45s, SD40-2s and just about any EMD from SD7 to SD70 standard cab.

You need to tag those locomotives to CONRAIL...
Favorite Locomotive??????
Nothing beats a good high nose GP9
SD28
SD70
SD80MAC
C415
C420
C424
NO GE's make the list
Since locomotives come in several flavors and nationalities:
US locos:
JNR locos:
Check out the C58 at:

Very favorite, with one foot in each camp:
Kiso Forest Railway 0-4-2T, Baldwin-built, modified with an industrial cyclone stack bigger than the boiler! KFR #6, now at the California Railroad Museum, is an example, but has some American modifications (cowcatcher pilot, classification lights) never seen in Japan.
Chuck (modeling Central Japan in September, 1964 - owns models of all of the above)

The SD20 were dang near new after Paducah got done remanufacturing them.
They added/changed:
Prime mover (2000 hp 645 engine, removing 567 engine)
All new electrical wiring
Paper air filter for the engine
Pressurized electrical cabinet
Modernized traction motor blower system (note the blower duct on the fireman's side, like a newer EMD)
New cab (some of the base engine were SD24Bs)
Chopped nose on most
Rebuilt fuel tank, with the main air reservoirs moved below the walkway, from on top.
They were the equivalent of a SD38, for a lot less money.
The blue card lists the engine as a SD20, not a SD24. After doing that much work to it, They can call it what they want.

(I don't know why) My point was that there was never a model designated SD20 directly built by a manufacturer. EMD had the SD24. An SD20 is a railroad rebuild though it is kind of a neat engine. Now an SD30...that would have been interesting. Sure there are SD20s. I've run a number of them. The blue card in the cab lists it as a SD20, built 1980.

My favorites would have to be...
Southern Pacific GS Class 4-8-4s
Union Pacific FEF-3s
Union Pacific Challengers
Take a Ride on the Scenic Line!
From an engineer's point of view, my hands down favorite is the SD9. The FP7 also rates high as that extra four feet between truck centers made them ride great compared to the freight F units.
Other favorites are:
SW-1 great for light industry work, bad track, coachyard, depot switching
SW-8 another great industry unit
GP-9 go anywhere, do anything unit
RS-3 ran circles around the GP7
SD40-2 EMD's crowning moment
B32-8 these three units made me a believer that GE was going to win the war!
My favorite loco is the FP7.
Favorite second generation diesel,SD45.
Favorite electric,GG1.
Favorite steam,SP GS4.
Here are a few.(Sorry I can't pickThere all my favorite.)
