I don't have the issue yet, but I'm assuming this was a photo caption? If so, could be the photo dated to before the E7 was damaged and rebuilt to E8 specs?

 

The photo is dated March 1955, approximately 21 months past the rebuild date . . .

New York Central Folio documents identify the unit in the photo as an E8Am. It was built in June 1953 on EMD repair order #8025. Some parts from the wrecked E7A 4003 were used in the rebuild, most notably the D4 generator. The interesting part about the second 4003 is that it weighed in at 340,000 pounds because it had two steam generators and extra tankage. It weighed the same as other heavy E unit users Illinois Cental, Pennsylvania and Union Pacific E8s.

I just got the 1000th issue! It's alright, except for the typo on page 45 where New York Central E8A 4003 is identified as an E7A. Maybe Trains looked at an old roster? Or Trains just doesn't understand the concept of a new underframe rebuild . . .
