Note that the dynamic brakes have been moved to the rear of the hood to provide space for the exhaust aftertreatment above the engine. New wider radiators have been fitted to allow for the dynamic brakes.
It would be easier to rebuild a six axle unit like an SD70 which has more or less empty space above the engine. You might even find room for aftertreatment for a 16 cylinder engine.

I wonder if since the article says, "...built for yard and intermediate operations ..." NS and maybe others would be willing to try the DEF options since it would be for local service and won't require them to make the DEF available system wide.

So, to the best of my knowledge, this is the first attempt to use DEF with the 710 in a railroad application. I believe it's been used in Marine applications for some time.
Interesting that it seems to fit fine on the GP59 frame. Which was a concern for the non-DEF T4 solutions. I wonder if EMD grabbed a couple of those SD60Ms or SD70Ms from UP and did a DEF upgrade on them if that wouldn't get the railroads seriously considering DEF for over the road.
Especially paired with some of the hybrid solutions we've talked about. Like, you could carry the DEF in the fuel tanks of the electric in a D-E-D engine set. Or, pair it with their Hydrogen fuel cell efforts.
