I worked a year for the NS, so yes, I got to experience how cold those EMD Spartan cabs can be, even with all the heaters going. We used to duct tape the front door shut just to keep what little heat we had out. The SD70's definatly pulled well when running good, and rode pretty nice to. The old high hood SD40-2's road just a bit better Mike
Silly NT's, I have Asperger's Syndrome
Then you know just how the crew felt, the cab heaters suck in those units. The EMD Spartan cab was not designed for Canadian prairie winters. They have big AC units mounted on the cab roof, so are a bit more comfortable during summer (but still very loud).
But they pull good when running properly, so are far from the worst of our units. Some have been retrofitted with Distributed Power as well, and may be seen anywhere in the train.

To add to the cold weather shot, I can remember being out along the IC near Gilman, IL in that kind of weather, so bloody cold that I got out of my Jeep, took a few shots, then got right back in to keep the camara from freezing up. This was pre digital camara era, so 35mm and slides. Those were the days! Mike the Aspie
There are quite a few of the final paint scheme, nick named "Death Star", out there on the former IC lines, as well as roming about the system. Post up your pics or pics you like of the former IC engines. I know quite a few of the SD70s remain in their IC colors, just needing a bath. Here is the 1011 coming out of a tunnel and on a much colder day, and my model of the 1011. Huge fan of the SD70's These were new power on the NS when I was railfanning them and the IC much more in the 1990's Mike the Aspie
