GE CCRCL
Posted by RailEagle on Friday, October 19, 2018 10:35 PM

Has UP started to scrap the CCRCLs on a system wide scale? I can confirm that UPY 139 and 140 (My favourite) have been scrapped. I am unsure of the fate of these unique RC platforms and if true it will be sad to see them go as they are on of UPs  unique quirks. Also as a side note I saw UPY 157 in storage and saw it’s door open. This may not sound like much but I thought that as part of the rebuild process the cab was sealed and painted over.

Cab wasn't sealed. The remote control equipment is inside, at the back of the cab. So there needed to be access.

While there may be some variety in specifics, just the cab windows were plated over. Side and door windows were retained.

Some of the side windows even retained the original 4 window arrangement, although most had the outer windows removed and plated over years earlier when they were active locomotives, leaving just the center pair.

They've started to be pulled out of storage and scrapped. A bunch were stored in Grand Junction and have started moving.

It's not too surprising that they are being retired and scrapped.  At best, they were an interim solution until a sufficient number of locomotives in yard, transfer and local service were equipped for remote control.

NorthWest

FYI,

Another story.

I too must admit that, being out of the loop,  I did not know what CCRCL meant, so I clicked on the Link and was apprised.

This jogged a long-dormant memory of attending a Foamer Fest back in the day of film and the talk was all about ASA, f-stops and emulsions and various folk holding forth about their new SLR and trip to some remote place to view the last wood-burning 0-2-0Ts w/Vacuum Brake and Buffers inside a country as parodied in the comic strip ' Dilbert '.

A telephoto was obligatory.

Blah, Blah, Blah and more Blah.

The BS got deeper, as everyone was boozing and eviscerating Rule G, avant gardes smoking Dope, some with BMWs or Volvo 544s  Racing Gloves for Rush Hour, in the Glove Box. Duh!

A 45 of Mr. D's Machine or Steam in the Snow playing @ Run 8 on the Stereo.

Lovely!!

( Another fest at New Years featured an air whistle off an Interurban ( M&SC?? ) at Midnight. )

Talk got around to the ' New Units ' the Company had converted as Control Cab Units.

Views appeared on the screen and the usual diatribes ensued, all the ' Experts' yelling about Sy Reich + Railroad Magazine, Extra 2200 South, the First Edition of DSG and the Baldwin Cab with a Baggage Section.

Hmmm.

Had never used this link until today, and was further apprised.

At the Slide Fest aeons ago versions of these were being called Control Units No Traction with an ' s '.

These are nicer. Note Port Hole in paint on front windows CP 7038.

On long pulls, these used to go past the end of our street towards Ballantyne.

OT.

Air Repeater.

Thank You.

Interesting that CP used an old FA as a shell for an air repeater.  A few weeks ago I got a pic of a CN air repeater at Homewood that was converted from a boxcar.  Not as eye-catching but just as interesting.
