Locomotives EMDX
Posted by Robert_Ibanez on Saturday, December 16, 2017 10:45 PM

Recently Ferromex tested a pair of EMDX units, the 1607 and 1608 during a month, but rumors say that they had a lot of fails so Ferromex canceled de test and returned them, right now they are heading to Muncie.

It looks that they will go back with GE but will have to wait and see.

Do any of you guys have any info if there are orders of either GE or EMD for 2018?

Hi, Robert!

It appears that no SD70ACe-T4’s have been ordered outside of UP’s 100 that still are being delivered in a haphazard fashion.

A pro-EMD railroader I know that has acquired a forceful distaste for newer EMD products has crewed the T4 model and has impressive words for them.  A horror for past newer EMD’ was the dynamic brakes.  But, the T4’s are almost as good as GE’s, he says. The T4’s also are super, super smooth riding to the point one no longer can tell how fast the engine is going by the feel!  And, the cab interior at night is super space age!  It has red lights lighting up the cab interior instead of the traditional white.  The ex-EMD man now a GE person loves the T4 experience!

Just though I would pass all that along …

Take care,

K.P.

I'm not sure why Ferromex would be testing Tier 4 locomotives unless they were needed for international service.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

BNSF has 175 ET44C4's on hand or on order as of now.  So UP is not the only raod ordering T4 locomotives.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to respond my question and give your opinions.

It's was satisfying to see those Tier 4 engines, but will have to wait if Ferromex takes a step with buying EMD or GE for 2018.

I think K.P. was referring to just the SD70ACe-T4 model and the fact that only UP has ordered them so far.

He doesn't work out of my terminal.  Most, including me, aren't too much impressed with them.  A couple of changes for the better, a couple for the worse.

Using the red light is optional, you can still turn on the white light.  As current locomotives go, GE is still better.  IMO, the wrong builder may be going out of business.

We have had two testing on CN for the past month, EMDX 1605 and 1606.  I haven't been on one yet but everyone who has seems to like them.  But we only have 4 SD70ACe's so it's hard to compare them.

But CN management does not seem to be impressed with them, that big 200 unit GE order was announced after several weeks of testing the two EMD's.

And as if to emphasize the unlikeliness of an EMD order, 1606 broke down while leading an oil train east of Edmonton, the day after the GE order was announced.  It caused the mainline to be tied up for several hours, and they had to get another engine to rescue the train.

BNSF is reported to have 10 SD70ACe-T4-P4 on order for 2018

It's my understanding that BNSF bought a total of 75 locos last year...so 10 of the T4-P4s is actually significant. In fact, besides the fact the CN is going on a slight buying spree, UP is the only railroad that had big purchases last year. 160 total T4 units from what I understand. Not sure if that is the 100 EMDs plus 60 GEs or if it's just what was delivered.
