Last Illinois Central E Units
Posted by IC EC on Thursday, February 16, 2017 8:34 PM

All,

By now, you can probably tell I really like the IC.  Anyway, does anyone know anything about the last two IC E (A) units that were recently (2014) moved to Cleveland?  There is a brief article online in the Akron Railroad Club newsletter titled "Languishing E Units to Get New Life in Cleveland."  These units sat in a field in Minerva, Ohio, for 15 or so years.  I hope someone will restore them, and I'm really surprised Ed Ellis did not buy them.  I like his Iowa Pacific units painted in IC colors, but there is nothing like the real thing.

Two of the four E units that moved from Minerva are ex-PRR, they plan to resore these units when funding is available.  The shop foreman at the Midwest Preservation Society told me they hope to restore them into the PRR's DGLE paint as many PRR restored units are in Tuscan.  Only one of these units was delivered in the DGLE paint when new to the PRR.

The other units are not in great mechanical shape and it was related they hope to cosmetically restore one of the units to a B&O passenger paint scheme from the 1950's.  The society's home is a former B&O roundhouse located in the Cleveland industrial flats and they feel it would be an appropriate choice.

No plans to scrap them, which is great.  Like many other of such groups around the country financing is a challenge and other projects have a priority.  Units are currently stored near the CSX Clark Avenue Yard.

Thanks very much!  I'm glad they are avoiding the scrap heap.

All,

Are there any updates for these units?
