Right, that's what I thought. The EMD Painted demo units (blue and silver) are already on property and are UP's.

Union Pacific is getting a total of 100 SD70ACe-T4 locomotives. That includes 12 of the Demonstrators.

So UP has ordered what, 65 of them so far. And demonstrators testing on BNSF & CSX. I heard CP was supposed to be taking a couple demonstrators for a test drive pretty soon too, are they on the property yet?

I know that UP has purchased 65, there are rumors however that they have ordered a total of 100. CP is currently testing a couple of units in the Calgary area, despite them saying they have no desire to purchase any new units.  I suspect NS will test them sooner or later.

I believe they had an option to get 100, but I'm unsure if they did it.

EMDX SD70ACe-T4 demo units 1607 and 1608 were delivered to NS for testing in October 2016.  They have been testing on NS out of Roanoke, VA, since November.  Here are some pics:

Will CN, NS or KCS be testing them too eventually?  I heard last summer that CN was supposed to be getting 2 demonstrators, but did that ever actually happen?

I also wonder how crew comfort will compare to older SD70's, specifically cab noise levels with the whispercab being replaced by an isolated powertrain.  GEVOs use that design too and are relatively quiet, but I find they are still louder than a true whispercab.  At least the angled teardrop windshields are back, they will be a real improvement over the phase-II cab's high, flat and deceptively narrow rectangles.

And finally has anyone on here actually run one, or have access to data on their performance?  I wonder how they compare to a 710-engined unit, or more importantly an ET44.

Greetings from Alberta

I don't think we have a thread for these yet...

After the demonstrators have suceeded in avoiding me, I finally caught my first, UP 3012, on both directions of the Coast Starlight (turned early) after the lead unit hit a landslide.

I do have some bad photos I could upload if desired. I don't have time now.

Observations:

A combination of new and old bits and will take a bit to get used to.

Very, very, very quiet. No louder than a truck at idle. I think it is because the particulate filter acts as a muffler.

UP apparently designates them SD70AHs, as it is written as such on the cab.

They still have Electro-Motive on the builder's decal.

The fabricated trucks and new cab are growing on me.
