DPU sets are independently controllable, and can be done at the engineer's discretion. It is commonly done.

DPU power management question
Posted by Paul Chi on Tuesday, July 12, 2016 9:09 AM

Does a Distributed Power Unit in the middle (or at the end) of a train run the same power as the lead units?  I would think that there would be times in hilly terrain when this would be undesirable.  Does the engineer have independent control of the DPU, and if so, is that regularly used?
