When several engines are connected togeather and they are not all in the same orientation (all Fs not at the same end) is there a switch on each unit to to say if it is in the forward or reverse orientation?

No, but there is a switch which designates "lead" or "trailing."

The switch also indicates if it is long hood or short hood forward.
That switch is for the headlights only, the M.U. cable and wires at both ends of the Loco determine what direction it loads, long hood foward orshort hood foward.

Read this reference and tell me if it adequately answers what you needed to know.
RME: Thank you so much. That is exactly what I was looking for. I saved the link to my favorites as it looks like it is worth exploring later. I suspected that it was in cables but I did not know for sure. Thanks to all who answered. I guess the only reason I wanted to know is inquiring mind, and somebody at work asked me. Not knowing the definitive answer I figured I would find out for sure.
