Commonly true - the 29.95 Earl Scheib job was not top quality. But they did last longer than the next rain! I know - I got a 29.95 special that looked pristine, in a rainy climate, for years. Everyone agreed I actually received the 59.95 paint job.

I heard those $29.95 paint jobs didn't last past the first rainfall.

Inflation from the 50's to the middle 60's.
Never too old to have a happy childhood!
You are a mere youth: "Any color, any kind for only $29.99, that's Earl Scheib!"
BaltACD Firelock76 Well there's a business opportunity for Maaco! Can't say the same for Earl Schieb, he's dead. While Earl died in 1992, the company continued to exist until 2010. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earl_Scheib

Wow...I can still hear him on those old television commercials.
I'll paint any car for $99.99
The current blue with off-yellow lettering and trim isn't too bad, either. It's reminiscent of the C&O/B&O colors of the late 60's-early 70's.
I feel that the YN2-BRIGHT FUTURE was the best CSX paint scheme ever. It looks as if CSX added BLUE to a GRAY and YELLOW L&N locomotive. David Briel
Either way, dead is dead.
Actually, when I moved to the Richmond, VA area in 1987 it was kind of cool CSX wasn't in any hurry to repaint. There was still a whole cornucopia of diesel paint schemes to be seen from the predecessor roads. Chessie System, Family Lines, Seaboard Coast Line, you name it. Even the occasional L&N engine showed up.
Firelock76 They just haven't caught up with those Midwest engines. They'll be repainted eventually, CSX never seems to be in a rush to repaint.

With the costs of repainting - you would not be in a hurry to repaint either.
Industrial grade paints aren't cheap, and the manpower required for a repaint isn't cheap either.
Earl Shieb and Maaco aren't involved in locomotive painting.
Lots of gray paint on CSX GE units, like the E-44, in the midwest, but in VA, big hp EMD units are ptd blue nose, yellow body.
