My company has issued a Bulletin restricting, by locomotive number, our Tier 4 GE locomotives from operating through rotary dump 'houses' at coal dumping facilities. Other carriers T4 locomotives were also listed by number. From this I have to deduce that the T4 GE's exceed the clearance footprint of thier T3 and earlier predecessors.
Never too old to have a happy childhood!
Very interesting nformation. Thanks. You must be either CSX or NS?
The highest point on an ET44 would seem to be the "box" around the two turbochargers. The radiators are sharply angled down to fit inside the standard clearance diagram but the rear of the engine hood is higher than an ES 44.
One of the things that struck me about the SD70ACe-T4 was that the new cab looked like it would fit through tighter clearances.
The cab on the original SD70ACe was too big for earlier car dumpers (the 1960s dumper from the Oroville Dam which was moved to Port Hedland in Australia wouldn't let an SD70ACe through). One nearly made it into the dumper as trailing unit radiator first but they heard the handrails being ripped off the inverter box and stopped before the cab came off...
The Sd70ACe-T4 might not have fitted there but the new cab does look more dumper friendly...
