Lately, NS has been buying pretty much every SD40-2 they can find, including the nonstandard ex-BN ones discussed a while ago. It is probably safe to say that they would still be around if they went on the market in 2013-2014 rather than 2009-2010.

BC Rail is interesting in that, for a Canadian road, a lot of their power was built in the US. Mostly, it is because in later years they bought a lot of power used.

They may of been eliminated just the same, but they'd of likely been worth more whole than as scrap, had they been retired say in 2014 rather than 2009 or so.

SmileI know the majority of the Canadian SD40-2's were scrapped, Ive got a plate from an ex-KCC SD40-2 (BCOL 741) but one from 751-767 is my main goal.... I talked to progress rail about the number boards from the B36-7's they have but they arent too keen on selling them. I truly dont think the recession had anything to do with CN scrapping most of the BCR locos, but thats my opinion and i dont want to start anything. I just want to touch base with the railroad community on what im looking for, as it's how i found the majority of my collection. So if anyone is looking for some extra cash and has any Canadian builders plate (legally obtained of course), BC Rail or MLW preferably, I will but on the spot. Thanks again for all the help!!

Thanks, and too bad.

BC Rail's SD40-2 fleet, both new and used, must be just about the most decimated one that there is so far. The recession really did a number it seems.

I bet they'd be showing their worth today had someone held on to them.

Order C429, built 9/80. A few have been scrapped by ASDX, two went to the ICE and are now on the CP, and one went to the WLE via MMA. The remainder were scrapped elsewhere.

Order C457, built 7/85: I think all scrapped by ASDX, but I'm not sure.

How are their 17 new build GMD's from the 1980's fairing (Including the last standard SD40-2 ever built)?

Edit: I guess the last standard cab SD40-2 built was actually a Mexican unit built about half a year afterwards.

The B39-8s are either stored or have been sold to shortlines, and a few have gone to Mexico.

I think most of the B36-7 have been scrapped, some may still be sitting at Progress Rail in Georgia.

Of the SD40-2s: most were actually EMD built, and ex-Kennecott Copper or Onieda and Western. Some have gone to be leasers at HCLX, a few went to ICE and DME, and about five were scrapped by ASDX. They hit the market during the power slump of 2009-10.

You are very unlikely to find a builders plate.

I'm surprised that there were mass scrappings of their SD40-2 fleet. They were some of the youngest around since they didn't even start buying any until the early 1980's, and pretty standard, as I recall.

I would've guessed that at least 75% were still around.

BCOL (BC Rail) SD40-2's disposition.

Hello i have a question regarding the disposition of most of the ex-BC Rail (CN) locomotives.... I understand a few went to Allied Services (ASDX) to be scrapped and others went to Western Rail (WRIX) for scrap. Does anyone know if there are old parts available from these locomotives??? What im looking for is any builders plates or number boards from these units. (SD40-2's, B36-7's, C30-7's etc) From the pictures ive seen, the builders plates were removed prior to scrapping, and almost all of these units went through CN's Homewood Illinois shops. Any info would be truly appreciated. Thank you!
