SD45?
Posted by tgee43 on Friday, September 12, 2014 6:40 PM

In Trains October issue, page 6, there is a picture of  NS and UP trains meet. Is it me, or is it a loco I don't know about. The NS loco looks like an ex BN SD45 in old BN paint. Closer look shows a -2 cab and coolant sight glass, and HT-C trucks. The big back porch really throws me. What is it?

It appears that it is ex-BN 7149, and was an HCLX unit of the same number before going to NS in late 2013. It is notable for being one of the three BN LNG test beds, and that is why it has the SD45 radiators on the standard SD40-2 long hood.

It is mechanically an SD40-2.

Note that radiator ends are not flush with the back wall, and there is a step where they were grafted on.
