Diesel Scrapped on TV Series

Okay, this may be a long shot, but hopefully I'll be able to get what I'm looking for. Back in 2007, The History Channel aired a TV program called 'Boneyard', which, as its name suggests, featured different kinds of scrapping and rebuilding facilities for railroads, shipyards, etc. The final episode showed some kind of diesel locomotive being cut up. This was a year of so before I really started to get into railfanning, so I don't recall what type of diesel it was. I distinctly remember seeing a material handler knock the prime mover sideways off the loco frame onto the ground, and thinking that couldn't be standard scrapping procedure! Anyone else remember this episode, and what kind of diesel was featured? My fuzzy memory remembers a large diesel, probably a 16-cylinder GE or EMD. For some reason, I think it may have been an old AMTK F40. The episode also chronicles the restoration of vintage passenger cars.

Here is a TV Guide page showing (limited) info on the episode: http://www.tvguide.com/detail/tv-show.aspx?tvobjectid=288917&more=ucepisodelist&episodeid=6785225

It was a Kansas City Southern SD40-2, as I recall.

Very close, it was a KCS straight SD40, so a little older. The locomotive saved in the episode was a former C&NW SD45 rebuilt to an SD40-2 and it also had dynamic brakes added at the time of rebuilding.

IIRC, the discussion at the time brought out that the loco had been involved in a head-on collision, so all the moving parts and things machined to close tolerances were deemed unsalvagable.  Under those conditions the prime mover is nothing more than a large chunk of metal, to be moved as simply and as cheaply as possible.

If the prime mover had been worth saving and rebuilding, it would have been handled with a lot more care.

In the above video, two engines are featured, on one the prime mover is reclaimed and goes to a rebuilder.  The other engine is bought before scrapping actions take place.  Neither engine displays collision damage.

BaltACD, I cannot get your link to work. It seems to be malformed.

Also, does anyone know how to tell the site to email me with replies to my threads? I can't figure out how to turn on this feature from a mobile device.

What you have to do is go to the bottom of the screen and select full site. Once you get to the full site on your mobile device on the right side of the page arr several boxes. Find the one marked "THREAD OPTIONS". In that box is the email replies selection.
Hope this helps.
