Not 100% correct.
The IC C40-8W's, following the 2400 series, still hold IC reporting marks. Nothing has been moved into the CN initial. Everything still holds the reporting mark it held before CN acquired the railways.
IC 2697 - 2726, which follow the Dash 9 number series, were delivered in CN paint and are identical to all the other CN Dash 9's with the exception of the air conditioning.
Paint means nothing. Of the units mentioned above, one is a CN unit and one is an IC unit. Remember, paint means nothing.
It annoys me to no end how many conductors and engineers can't figure out that there are IC, WC, DMIR, EJE, and BCOL units in CN paint that are not CN engines.

CN apparently did not develop a renumbering scheme when it absorbed WC, IC, DMIR, B&LE and EJ&E. The various locomotives which were repainted into CN colors kept their old numbers but had sub-lettering added to distinguish for possible duplications, as mentioned by the original poster.
