BNSF (Adding radiator modifications?)
Posted by samfp1943 on Saturday, June 1, 2013 11:28 PM

While running some errands this afternoon, I noticed several BNSF Locomotives on trains on the El Dorado Sub South of Wichita ( Between Mulvane, and Wellington,Ks); Both East and Westbond). Something seemed strange about them(?)

Got another closer look on the four head end units on a passing UPS Stacker and TOFC train headed west.  It was the radiator area-- that had added a horizontal deflector to the outboard radiator edges.  IT seems to have been a heavy metal extension added over the outer radiator edge and extending forward ( toward the Cab end).   Basicly an ' L ' shaped deflector(?) added to the outboard edge and extension. It does not appear on all the GE units, but on some of the newer (cleaner?) units.

I apologize for the poor description, but noticed this while driving, and the trains were approaching track speed around here.   I was wondering if this is a new feature on the locomotives or some kind of a temporary fix to handle an issue of cooling. ( possibly as in the old 'tunnel motor' adaptions of the past?).

Was wondering if anyone else has seen this adaption or maybe had a chance for a photo of them?
