Does anyone have any dimensions on the new GP20C-ECO's and are they turbocharged ?There's a couple of videos on Youtube of them and if they are turbocharged there appears to be NO turbocharger lag !!
Thanks,GeneSouthernAlco
The GP20C-ECCO's are powered by the 8-710 engine which is turbocharged. Since its a 2 stroke engine to start it and to run at low power it has the unique clutch speed increaser ( about 18 to 1) gear drive. At over half power there is enough energy to overspeed the clutch and then it a pure turbo. It like the set up in a bicycle in that if you start down hill you can stop peddling. When the engine accelerates the clutch is engaged and the impeller part of the turbo is like a supercharger.
EMD's ECO rebuild package is built around the 710 engine. The GP20C-ECOs use the 8 cylinder model rated at 2,000 HP. Like every 710 model ever built, they are turbocharged. There is not a Roots blower option (like on the EMD 38 series) available for that prime mover.
