The grades are not that important (1,6 to 1,8 %). The problem is the fact that this diesels are really bad, since they were 'custom built' using a bunch of parts 'imposed' to the maker, including a very small and unreliable diesel engine (a french built SACM AGO series V12) that was really, really pushed to its limits. That's why I prefer american built engines, EMDs, GEs or Alco. Much better than these frenchie stuff by Alsthom

Seems like an awful lot of fuss and bother for 16 cars of sand.  Must be some really steep grades.
