UP assigns SD70M, SD70ACe and C45ACCTE to intermodal trains most likely due to a lower percentage of road failures.  When it comes to tonnage ratings though UP, like all class ones, rates AC traction motor units higher than their DC counterparts.

Yes, I understand about the flared rdiators re for the Tier I compliance, but what I am asking  is when UP assigns SD70M's to a train, do they really care if they have flared radiators or not?

Can't think of a reason why they would.  HP, TE and adhesion should be the same.

If UP wanted more horsepower from the Tier 0 SD70Ms that they could, just change the engine control software to turn it into a SD75M. CSX did this with their SD70MACs, both Tier 0 and Tier 1 versions.

Based on what I see as I watch trains leave and enter Roseville off the Valley sub, they treat SD70M/SD70ACe/C44AC/C44ACCTE/Dash9/C45ACCTE and SD9043 all the same.

You can see any of those on any train at any time.

Although I rarely see Dash 9s.

Though I don't have any access to UP locomotive tonnage ratings, I expect both varieties have the same tonnage rating and thus, from the standpoint of assigning power to trains - there is no difference.

I'm unaware of UP caring between the 2. Although given that the HP is slightly different, they might.

A related question. Are there any important differences between an SD70M-T1 with the 2 sets of radiator grills vs. The SD70M-T1 with the 4 smaller sets of grills or is it just EMD switching to a new design with no substantive difference?

Indeed, the later SD70M's had split radiators. I think the split radiators look better with the "M" cab. Suits the styling better in my opinion. Did the split cooling system enhance the performance of the locomotives at all?

What is the difference between the SD70M and the SD70M with the flared radiators?

Split cooling.  That is, the aftercoolers that cool the air coming out of the turbocharger blower have their own loop to the radiators.  This allows the intake air to be cooler and results in less NOx emissions.

Those units are all a part of a 1,000 unit order that was placed with EMD in 1999 ... the first of them were the 'normal' SD70Ms, while the later ones were Tier 1 due to government regs that went into effect while those units were being built.

The later produced units are also 4,300 HP instead of 4,000.

I noticed that UP does not distinguish between flared and regular SD70M's in their roster.   Is this because they do nt care, and SD70M is and SD70M, flared radiatrors or not???

What is the difference between the SD70M and the SD70M with the flared radiators?

The SD70Ms with flared radiators meet the more stringent Tier 1 exhaust emissions standards.Extra cooling capacity is needed.
