First of all it is properly called a "consist" (not a lashup) and yes they are probably in tow.

I see a lot of dvd's with 5 or 6 locomotives with the last one being a switcher type locomotive.  The switchers have less horsepower than the road units, so is the switcher really helping with pulling the load or is it just sort of being (pulled) or dragged along by the larger road units?
