SD90/43 TO SD90MAC
Posted by caldreamer on Friday, April 29, 2011 11:53 AM

What changes if any would have to been made to install the 6000 HP diesel in the SD90/43's.   Would there hve been any external changes or would the body have looked the same?  Supposidly they were convertable from the 4300 to 6000 HP diesels.

I am not aware of any that were ever converted.  However, the SD90MAC has a tapered long hood over the engine compartment - different than the SD90/43MAC.  I doubt anyone will ever do a conversion as the 6,000 hp '265' powerplant is not EPA Tier II certified.

Jim:

I know that there no conversions done. But if the 6000 HP 265H engine had been put in an SD90/43 my question was would any external changes have been necessary and if so what would they have been.  As stated in my orignal post these were "supposed" to be convertable to the 6000 HP engine.

Fortesque Metals of Australia bought 5 used SD 90H's that they were going to have NS at Altoona convert with 16-710 engines but they got in a hurry and bought 4 more and had NS give them a lick-and-a-promise and a new paint job and sent those as is to Australia for immediate service. As far as the last 5 are concerned I guess there needs to be engineering work done and then what are they going to use for engines, wreck take outs?

The only differance between the SD90/43 and the SD90MAC is that the long hood is squared on the SD90/43 whereas it is beveled on the SD90MAC.  I believe the beveled long hood would reduce the space in the engine compartment. With the squared edges on the SD90/43 giving it more space, I presume that the 265H would fit inside the SD90/43 whithout modifications. Hope this helps.

I think the beveled hood top was to accommodate power assembly changeout, as the 265H engine is different from the 710G engine. As I understand it, the power assembly on the 265H comes out the angled portion, while on the 710G you can remove it through the hood doors, like the 567 and 645 series diesel engines.

Thanks to all that replied. Now I know that I will be able to model not only the SD80-43MAC;s , but also the upgrdeedced engines version and the SD89MC since they all hd the same body.  The only difference with SD89MC ws tht it hd the 12 cylinder GM265H engine rated at 4500 HP.

INRD currently has 12 SD9043MAC's on roster for unit train service.  They are on long-term lease from CIT Financial, where they were numbered in the 100 series.

The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul
