ECO/EVO series prime mover repowering programs
Posted by CNW 6000 on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 7:14 AM

I was thinking (after finding a video of one of EMD's 710 ECO rebuilds) about GE's Evolution Series prime mover and other motive power platforms.  Could/does GE 'update' older locos (Geeps, etc) with an EVO-based prime mover?  Is EMD having any luck with their program?

GE offers a 'Straight 6' GEVO re-power package(sort of 1/2 of a standard V12 GEVO).  I have not seen/heard of any takers.  The EMD 710ECO package comes in two versions; a V8 and a V12.  Right now, I think they have done maybe something like a dozen for KCS and UP.

GE is offering the package and has also stated they would build new ES23B locomotives if someone would order them:

No RR orders so far although wasn't there an article recently about GE getting a contact to repower switchers at the Port of Houston?

This is the article your talking about. The locomotives in question have CAT 35xx engines that are tier 2 but they could probably be converted to spark ignited gas engines that should be sufficient. GE claims they can deliver Tier 4 engines in a couple of years - good luck. At a price of $2 mil each they could build new locomotives rather than fiddle around with a conversion.
