In a sweeps week idea somebody rode the train to downtown and back again pulling air samples.  Guess what?  When the train pushs the particulate in the cars is less than when it pulls.  Amazing results huh?  Diesels smoke and the fumes cause problems.  One probably inhales ten times the amount boarding a train at Union Station where the diesels burble under the building above.  I guess the sky is falling again.

The soot that's the health problem is stuff you can't see.  A "storm cloud" of smoke is mostly big particle.

Polluting engines on Metra

One of the reasons of the pollution on Metra is the Engines themselves. I'm wondering which engines are more polluting, in the case of the pollution bi-levels. I for one think that the MP36 is the Worst in show because whenever i see it depart a station, it's creating a "storm cloud". this is my opinion, you can reject it and I can accept your opinions.
