Fastest way might be to find an Interstate Battery Rep in your area and he might be able to find them for you.

I thought at first they might be Bus Batteries, but it has been years since trucks and buses use those large 12 volt batteries.

You don't say were you are located and that might be an issue in finding replacement batteries?

Locomotive Batteries for a GE 44 Tonner
Posted by dmw280 on Saturday, January 8, 2011 6:42 PM

Hello -

I am in the process of trying to find out what kind of batteries a GE 44 Tonner switcher takes. I volunteer with a Shortline and we would like to fire up this locomotive once again. We've already figured out the batteries are dead. The only problem is figuring out what we need. Can anyone help?

So far, we know it's an 8 volt, 4 cell battery. 1 set consists of 8 batteries. The existing battereies are 24 inches long, 7.5 inches front to back, and 8 inches high.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Photos are linked below.

Thank you.
