The useful analogy is to think what happens in a Tug-o'-war people of varying strength are pulling on a rope all are contributing, just some more than others. It is the same way with locomotives. The wheels are not mechanically linked to the motor, so there is no direct relationship between the speed of the diesel motor and the speed of the locomotive down the tracks.
Ok, so what you are saying is that the lead unit controls the trialing units through the "ambilical" cord. So what you are saying here is that it does not matter if a AC unit is trainling a DC unit they will be both putting out the same power and the AC unit will not "overpower" the DC unit. So if both units are in run 8 the AC unit will not "out" traction the DC unit? thanks
The Units do not care how they are lashed. The lead unit contorls the others. Just make sure if you have DC units that you do not get into the MAx SHort time rating of the Traction Motors or your going to make an Expensive piece of Junk out of them.
Can someone explain how a EMDSD70AC attached to a EMDSD40-2 and a say GE DASH 9 all run together? How do the AC traction motor units run with the DC traction units? I often see dash 9s with AC4400s ect? Thank you. Also do they tug at each other if there is a slower running unit or a unit in not good repair
