Where are the former IC units on the CN these days? I live in far southern Illinois, and it's been quite awhile since I've seen any of them,

Then they will need to get the 1033 upgrade applied to them.

The CN will most likely operate the 40C DASH 8's on the IC-WC lines with occasional trips over the GTW.

This was posted elsewhere as well, but I'll add it to this thread too. The first of these Dash 8s has been repainted into CN colours, and was seen outside the Centralia, Illinois shops.

The LMS Dash-8-40CWs were effectively always owned by CN. When CSX and NS split Conrail, the reason for LMS to exist ended. The LMS fleet was divided between the owners of LMS, of which CN was one. So CN received an amount of the LMS locomotives in proportion to its ownership. Word is that the Dash8s will go to Canada to avoid then need to upgrade the emissions controls, which would be necessary if CN wants to use them in the US. Note they may briefly operate in the US until they need to be overhauled, which is likely to be soon since UP had every incentive to use them up.

CN acquires former CNW/UP C40-8s

I heard CN acquired a batch of former CNW/UP C40-8s.  It’s rare for a Class 1 to acquire used/second-hand GEs, especially GEs that are 20+ years old.  I wonder if CN will operate these in the states too?  It’s surprising CN acquired these 6-axle Dash 8s after retiring their SD50Fs a couple years ago.  Of course the SD50Fs were the only 645F-powered EMDs on CN’s roster, while they still have cowl/draper-taper C40-8Ms that are mechanically identical to the spartan-cab C40-8s. IIRC, this wasn’t the first time CN acquired second-hand Dash 8s.  Several years ago CN got former LMS/CR blue C40-8Ws with IC reporting marks.
