Visited the plant yesterday after three months and noticed that there was progress with the UP locos.

Two locos were to the north of the plant on what I assume is a test track, one was #2473. The locos were facing away from the plant and had new cowlings on the rear painted in white "primer". The locos  were overall still unpainted and  covered in graffiti.

There were also two brand new 70's in front of the factory ingrey primer and I would love to know their running numbers.

Everyone on this forum seems to know a lot about EMD and I have a question that came to mind from the recent newsletter article on the Trains web site.  Here is the statement and I was wondering what Class One did not have the EMD SD70M-2 or the SD70Ace.  I was thinking CP but I may be wrong.  Any thoughts would be appreciated. Electro-Motive is North America's second-largest builder of diesel locomotives. Its current models, the SD70M-2 and SD70ACe, have sold to six of the seven U.S. and Canadian Class I railroads

The 10 units currently being rebuilt are all the later 2 window units. They will retain their original cabs, there is no reason to replace them.

Are the SD60Ms being rebuilt early phase with the 3-pane window cab or the later SD60Ms with the 2-pane teardrop-window cab that is also used on the SD70Ms?  I wonder if the SD60M/ECO rebuilds will retain their original safety cabs?

Visited EMD today,Saturday, and the UP locos were no longer at the rear of the plant. There was. however , a brand new CN SD70M-2 #8888. Will be visiting EMD again at the end of next week.

 Thanks. It is an interesting project and one I hope is sucessful so we can see the SD60M's around for many more years.  The SD40-2's will be replaced at least in California once these units are finalized and tested and deemed ready.  We now are seeing various local trains with SD70M's and Gevo's around Roseville Ca. 

 I noticed the KCS received some of their version of the ECO models rebuilds and they are lower HP models and in different car bodies.

The 2200hp version will work in the "40" series. So KCS and KCSM have SD40 and GP40 rebuilds.

On October 22nd I saw and photographed #2511/2518/2520 and#6341 at the rear of the plant. On November 12th 32473/2495/2497/2518 and 2520 were visible. A total of 7 locos.

Thanks for the update.   I read the new engine and software version would be about 3000 HP down from the 3800 HP of the orginal SD60M.  This would allow the standard radiator to cool the 3000 HP better and meet Tier II regulations.   Do you know if any test units on the road at this time??

Six have been sent to EMD, at least one was at LaGrange, I don't know if they all are at London now.

What model locomotives are these?

UP SD60M model locomotives. The speculation is that the initial locomotives will go into local service in California. If they prove successful, and the conversion cost is right, more will be rebuilt and they will replace various local service SD40-2s around the UP system.

Does anybody know what is happening with the Union Pacific locos that are at the rear of the works in various stages of disrepair?

 

As stated they are there to be rebuilt with  3000hp. V12 710ECO diesels for UP.

My understanding is that they are to be rebuilt as "ECO" series locomotives.
