UP #54, GE gas turbine
Posted by Lyon_Wonder on Friday, November 20, 2009 3:58 PM

Someone on locophotos posted a pic of a UP GE gas turbine, UP #54 at Laramie, WY in 1957.  This turbine was built by GE in 1952, and only lasted until 1962 when it was scrapped and it's trucks sent to GE for U25Bs.  UP #54 is the carbody-style turbine, though some later turbines had a hood unit-style long hood.  The trucks on some of UP's turbines ended up being reused on GE's U50 double-diesels.

I found a VHS video tape of UP Turbines. I rushed home to view it.

Nice shots of the engines.

PROBLEM they dubbed over a BOAT outboard motor as the sound track.

I was back faster than the speed of light for my money back.

In that picture, note the fuel tender!!

There are several gas turbine freight videos on the You Tube but all of them have someone talking over the noise, or no noise, or bluegrass music, or it's a video of one exploding.

All I can remember is the name was "U.P. Gas Turbine". I do not remember who produced the video.

Are familiar with the book TURBINES WESTWARD by Thomas R. Lee, on the development and operation of UP's gas-turbine fleet ?  I'm pretty sure it has lots of photos and information on #54, as well as the others.
