I caught one of the new 6600 class GEVO's C4 unit at Summit on the Mojave sub doing about 40 mph while pacing it. The new units have LED's in the number boards also and really great reflective lettering.

That's a neat effect - well-captured in the photo, too - very visible, but maybe a little spooky. Can you imagine what that looks like from a little farther away, and in dimmer lighting - so that the dark details and shapes aren't visible to help identify what it is to someone not familiar with contemporary railroading ? Such as out near 'Area 51' or anyplace in New Mexico along the TransCon Line - ''Geez, maybe the aliens have landed here !''

Good idea on trying different distances for the effect. These new units are the first to have the numbers under the cab that reflect. I took some of the following units and the numbers do not show up.
The LED number boards are really neat but some of the people I talked to did not like the effect of those new bright number boards.
This is on the ground at Monolith at close to 40mph. I was surprised this one came out. See the large number boards and how much light they put out.
These are photos I took in 2006 at the CN yard in Battle Creek of a new SD-70ACe that also had reflective numbers, look black at an angle but reflected white when more straight on.

Good point. I did not mention the numbers were black until the reflective light made them white. That is some kind of new reflective type material that I had not seen prior to the latest units.

That's a cool photo. I have one I took of the Southwest Chief arriving at Williams Junction, AZ just as the sun was coming up. I can see the reflective lighting along the side of the cars. But it's not a digital so I can't share it. This is a good idea.

That 'reverse reflective' letter in nothing new. SOO had back lettering on their cabooses that reflected white at night(and this was in the late 60's). At the time the ywere using a 3M Scotchlight or Damond grade product. Even the coupola on the wide vision cabooses was covered with red material and reflected at night.

If you do not have a local scanner connected to your PC....
You can convert non-digital pictures to digital by going to a local FED-EX Kinkos and scanning them onto CD-ROM. They have a machine that does that. Also have one where you can plug in your digital mem card and write to CD-ROM.
Nice pictures all. Here's one of my shots of BNSF 6615 at MP 377.0 on UP's Mojave Sub. I got a little reflection off the #s.

Very nice shot of the 6615. The side numbers do not show up due to the angle but the front end is absolutely great! I had read the BNSF had more of these new units on the way. Does anyone know if they are on the road yet??
In going through some of my night shots I found this one of BNSF 7425 passing the Mojave yard and UP 8470. The 2008 run of GEVOs must have also came with the reflrctive #s under the cab, got them to light up good in this shot.
Neat picture. I can't figure out what the lower horizontal lights are. Maybe step lights???
