Electric locomotives have a continuous HP rating and various higher short-term HP ratings based on the ability of the electrical system to withstand the abuse. Is there a rule-of-thumb formula that can roughly calculate a short-term rating as a percentage over the continuous rating?
Most current European electrics quote a "One-hour" rating, as well as a continuous rating. But I don't see consistancy in the overload factor between the two that I know. The Siemens Eurosprinters have a continuous rating that is much closer to the "One-hour" rating. I suspect that this is their choice to provide a cooling capacity allowing continuous operation much closer to the absolute capacity of the electrical equipment.
