The picture was taken in Colfax on 2/16/2009 while waiting for the 1988 to arrive.   The 580 was leading #5 westbound and #6 was waiting in Colfax for the Flanger to lead it east over the Hill.   

This is the 1988 an hour or so later.

According to the Utah Rails web site, six units, UP 572, 580, 600, 602, 604, 606 (ex SP 4809, 4817, 4839, 4840, 4841, 4843), are equipped for snow service on Donner Summit.  The six units are equipped with icicle breakers, wire screen protection for the cab windows, and foul-weather spinning cab window inserts.  For better braking control during service in severe weather, all six units also received old style Blomberg trucks (known as Blomberg B) with dual-clasp brake rigging.

 I am not sure of the exact numbers, but close to six units are in Roseville that have the special windows and ice breakers on the cab.

I will look at my pictures to get some more of the numbers of the units that were previous SP units in snow service.  580 and 576 pictured, but the 576 does not have the special snow service.  I found pictures of the 585 and 604 both use in Snow service.

The GP28P's (BN/BNSF 1590-1599) were equipped with extra electrical connections to provide power for slugs or rotary snowplows.

I don't know the entire class - or even the total number.   I do know for sure that #604 is a snow service GP38-2, (icicle breaker bars, rotary wipers, etc.) as I have a photo of it from Feb. 2007 at J.R. Davis Yard in Roseville CA.

According to James Kerr's 2008 Edition of "The Official Locomotive Rosters & News", the 604 (Not UPY) falls into a "Class" of fifteen (15) GP38-2s numbered from 593 to 609 (with 607 & 608 excluded).  I don't know if all 15 are equipped for snow-service, but again, at least #604 is... so one can presume that the other snow service units are probably in that class - but I am just guessing.

I am not aware of any BNSF (or ex-ATSF or ex-BN) units that were dedicated for snow service, but I don't want to make a definitive statement there...

Would Anyone happen to know the Current U.P. GP38-2 sow duty engine roster? Also would B.N.S.F. happen to have snow duty locomotives. Thanks ahead!
