Probably a GP38-2 high hood... I live 30 miles south of Lafayette Indiana. The NS yard's have 7 or 8 each. The unit's are x- Southern railroad units.
The road to to success is always under construction. _____________________________________________________________________________ When the going gets tough, the tough use duct tape.
Many of the high-nose GP38's (SR) and GP38AC's (both N&W and SR) have been rebuilt into low-nose GP38-2's in the 5500 and 5600 series. A fair number of the high-nose GP50's have been rebuilt into low-nose GP38-3's in the 5800 series.
Lyon_WonderWhat about high-nose SD40-2s and GP38ACs. Are any of those still around?
The gp 38 are being made into sd38 low nose now with air conditioning and the sd 40s it dont matter to me if they are standard or dash- 2 they are around. they are rated the same so looking to see if they are dash 2 isnt something I do or care about
I saw a high nose NS straight SD40 a couple of momths ago on a BNSF train in Fullerton,CA.I had a special interest in this engine, because this same unit was a helper on a 611 trip I rode in 1992.
there is plenty of gp38 59 60 units in service and a few old southern sd 40s . on his site he didnt list ole 59 a sd9 engine that was used in yard service for years last i heard it was made into a remote controll unit. not sure were it ended up i sent it toward kansas city years ago . I also doubt it was a ns crew down there in houston we dont go that far,
I see them every day on the NS Piedmont divsion
There are still several High hood locos in yard duty and local service on the NS system .
The only high hood four-axle locomotives currently in service on NS are the EMD GP38-2 units in the 5000-5256 series and the EMD GP50 units in the 7003-7091 series.
The full current NS locomotive roster can be found on my website here:

There's a few ex-SR high-nose GP38-2's working in the Chicago area in yard and transfer service. I regularly see one or two at Landers on my ride to and from work.
Almost anything!
NS' predecessor railroads Southern and N&W both continued to specify high high short hoods well after low noses were standard.
So if any four motor GEs remain in service, it could be a B23-7 or a B30-7 although that seems unlikely.
But GP38s and GP38-2s, GP40s, GP39x and GP49s, GP40x and GP50s were built for Sou/N&W/NS with high short hoods and all of these would look generally similar apart from the number of radiator fans.
Quite a few of these would still be around.

Tonight I saw a high nose Norfolk Southern engine sitting in Lloyd Yard in Spring, north of Houston. It's a UP yard but NS has trackage rights through here and makes the occassional stop there. I haven't seen a high nose anything in years. Not since I was a kid. I wish it had been daylight so I could have seen more detail but it was just too dark. All I could make out is that it had 4 wheel trucks. It's profile wasn't what I remembered high nose GP7's, 9's, 18's, etc to look like so I'm a bit confused. I didn't think any of those were still around anyways. Any clues what it could have been?
