 BNSF is in the process of building and testing a hydrogen fuel cell/storage battery/hybrid switcher. The US Army and the Department of Energy are working on a similiar locomotive project. I recomend you google "Hydrogen economy" (and the Wikipedia entry that will be one of the first hits is a good place to start) to get an idea of the considerable challenges of developing hydrogen as commonly used fuel...
