You have a Athearn DD40 which is actually a DD35A in which Union Pacific was the only operator of the type. Southern Pacific had three DD35B's (these were cabless) which were basically 2 GP35's mounted to a single frame. Athearn painted the DD35's in numerous road  color schemes that never owned them so that they would appeal to a greater base  of modelers and to sell more units. Model manufactureres do this frequently, I have seen Santa Fe FA1's, Southern Pacific RS-16's, etc. etc, to name a few that proves this.

UP and SP were good at getting such things as double engined monstrosities from both builders, including two different versions of a double engined U25B.   And lets not forget the hydraulics!

Do an internet search for a Union Pacific DD35 they were the only railroad that ever had them. To most people they look the same. DD35's were produced. DD40's were catalogued by EMD but never produced. Athearn jumped the gun back in the 1960's and built them before the model was dropped by EMD.

Southern Pacific had them as well, but i believe they were the only 2 railroads to get those beasts

You won't find a picture of a real one because they didn't exist, strictly an Athearn fantasy model based on a product that was potentially offered but never built.

I am assuming you are talking HO and it has eight axles or four per truck. That pretty much limits it to an Athearn or Bachman DD40.  I pretty much lean toward the Athearn as I don't think Bachman made one in PRR paint.  Do an internet picture search for DD40 and I think it will confirm my thoughts. You won't find a picture of a real one in PRR paint.  They never had them.

I'm trying to find out what loco I have so I can get a DCC decoder for it.  It's 12 inches long, black, 16 wheels, 8 fans on top, and the #is 9002.  It has PRR markings.  It's flat in the back and on the front, the cab and body come to a point, not rounded.  And this thing is heavy.  I've had it for I know 10 years or more.  I can't find anything like it in the Walthers' catalog.  When I run in on my Digitrax DB150, It will cause the system to shut down, so I know it pulls some pretty mean current.  It may pull too much current to be able to run it on DCC.  If you have any idea what this thing is I would appreciate anyone letting me know.  Thanks---Slugger

You'll probably have more luck over in the Model Railroader magazine forums, Trains magazine is a mag about real railroads. Anyway, I tried finding a PRR all-time roster online but couldn't find one, so not sure what you have there. Maybe someone more familiar with the Pennsy will have a roster to look up no. 9002.
